News Around the Net!
Let’s begin with this spectacular new trailer for Avengers: Infinity War:
That is just great on all counts. I am in awe of the audaciousness of just how many main characters are being combined into this film. Thanos looks and sounds great. Seeing Chris Pratt and Robert Downey Jr. (as xx and Tony Stark) on screen together made me smile so wide. I am pleased that Gamora looks like a major part of this, and intrigued by what look like flashbacks to when Thanos first met her as a young girl. (Gamora’s snapping her fingers is, of course, a reference to a pivotal moment in The Infinity Gauntlet comic book series. I love the nod, but I also dearly hope we do actually get to see that moment with Thanos in this movie.). I can’t believe this is coming out in just a little over a month!! I can’t wait. (Here is an interesting interview with the film’s co-director, Joe Russo, with several fascinating tid-bits.)
I was saddened to read of the recent passing of Stephen Hawking. One things that made me smile, though, were the number of references I saw online to his appearance, as himself, on Star Trek: The Next Generation! Here is a lovely look back at that scene by the episode’s author, Ronald D. Moore (who went on to create and run Battlestar Galactica).
Speaking of Trek, as readers of this blog likely know, my favorite of the Trek series is Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I was pleased to see the show get some love recently at io9. (Props to the author for mentioning Sisko’s “it’s easy to be a saint in paradise… but this isn’t paradise” speech, which was a perfect encapsulation of what DS9 was all about.) Boy do I miss that show. I miss the days when great Star Trek was happening weekly on TV.
I can’t wait for the final season of The Americans to start next week. Here’s a great article about the show as it enters its home stretch. And here’s a fun clip of the show’s stars (and real-life couple) Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys on Stephen Colbert’s show.
I haven’t gotten to see the movie adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time yet, but I hope to soon (even though I haven’t been wild about the trailers). I loved that book as a kid, and just recently I thoroughly enjoyed reading it to my daughters (who were super-into it as well). I quite enjoyed this author’s look back at how she felt Madeline L’Engle’s novel defined her own “beautiful girlhood.”
I’m looking forward to seeing Frank Oz’s upcoming Muppet Guys Talking documentary. Here’s the trailer.
And here’s another fantastic-looking trailer, for Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, a documentary on Mr. Rogers:
Sniff, I’m not tearing up, there’s just some dust in the air. Moving on…
I don’t think there is any way I will actually watch the Cobra Kai series, but I must admit I did quite enjoy watching this trailer!
I sort of love that this show is in continuity with the original Karate Kid film… and I am intrigued that Daniel La Russo looks like he might not be the hero any more.
My final note for today: I am honored to be included among a wonderful array of artists in the Brooklyn, NY show POW! Jewish Comic Art and Influence. The show opens on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 7:00-9:00 PM, and will run until May 20th. The show is presented by the Jewish Art Salon and the Brooklyn Jewish Art Gallery. More info can be found here!
