News Around the Net: August, 2026

There have been a lot of fun trailers & other cool announcements lately!  Let’s dig in!

It came out last month, but I don’t think I’ve shared the Dune Part 3 trailer yet:

What a trailer!  I cannot believe they actually made this film, and that we’re getting it so soon after Part 2 That trailer looks phenomenal.  I can’t wait to see what Denis Villeneuve has done with the very strange Dune Messiah novel by Frank Herbert…!

I am super excited by this fantastic-looking trailer for Ahsoka season two:

Wow, that trailer looks awesome; it promises the Thrawn-versus-everyone action I’d really hoped we’d have gotten in season one.  I love Thrawn’s line about declaring war on the Rebel Alliance; that’s a perfect Thrawn line.  I like seeing Ezra and Zeb hug.  I really really really want this season to be great.  Come on, Dave Filoni!!  Don’t let us down!

Speaking of long-awaited, here’s a trailer for VisionQuest, finally picking up on the thread of the White Vision from the end of WandaVision:

That looks great.  It’s being helmed by Terry Matalas, who did such a masterful job on Picard season three, so I have high hopes.

Here’s a new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday:

That’s solid.  Doom looks great, and so far I’m liking Robert Downey Jr.’s voice for the character.  I also really loved this very funny video that Hugh Jackman & Ryan Reynolds recorded.  Are those two in Doomsday??  I hope so!

This is a strong final trailer for Lanterns:

I just watched the first episode and it was GREAT.  I can’t wait to see more.

I’m not sure the world needed a third version of The Thomas Crown Affair (I love the Pierce Brosnan/Renee Russo version), but casting Michael B. Jordan in the title role is a tremendous idea:

I loved William Gibson’s novel Neuromancer back in the day; I’m due for a re-read!  I’m intrigued to see this trailer for a TV show adaptation.  On the one hand, that’s a great idea, because the book rocks.  On the other hand, is it too late?  Neuromancer has been ripped off by so many other TV shows and movies — like The Matrix and Strange Days — will this feel like “been there, done that”?  I’m curious…

It’s a major victory that Coyote vs ACME is actually getting released, after Warner Bros. tried to bury it three years ago.  This is a strong trailer — I hope this winds up being good and does well!

This Clayface trailer is creepy.  I guess that means it’s an effective trailer, though right now this doesn’t look like my kind of movie.  I don’t really watch horror movies like this.  If I didn’t know this was a movie about a Batman villain, I’d for sure not be planning on seeing this.  I am curious, though…

Is there any chance this Blade Runner 2099 TV show will be any good?  This trailer is solid:

I love the original Blade Runner and Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 I’m not sure I have much faith this TV show expansion will be worthwhile, but I’ll give it a chance.

Speaking of TV show expansions, here’s a trailer for Avatar: Seven Havens:

I’m 100% on-board for new Avatar: The Last Airbender content, though I’m not so wowed by that trailer.  But I’ll definitely give this a chance, as well.

I am intrigued by this trailer for Boorman and the Devil, “the true story of how one of the world’s greatest filmmakers made one of the most hated movies ever”:

I loved The Center Seat, a wonderful documentary series exploring the history of Star Trek TV shows and movies, and so I’m delighted that a second season is coming:

I’m also looking forward to The Sixty Year Mission, another Star Trek documentary project, this one a film overseen by Mark A. Altman, who is one of the hosts of the great Inglorious Treksperts podcast, and who has been writing about Star Trek for decades.

I’m so excited that Batman: Caped Crusader is finally back for a second season!

I loved the first season, which I’m currently in process of re-watching before moving on to season two…

I’m somewhat dubious about whether The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be worthwhile, but I’m definitely rooting for this to be great!  They really are finally making this…!

The Hollywood Reporter has an interesting piece exploring the apparently troubled post-production process on Supergirl.  I liked the movie, even though I had a lot of criticism of it’s second half in my review.  I wish it had done better at the box office.  I think Milly Alcock was great in the role, and I want to see more of her playing this character!

Click here for a great interview with Anya Taylor-Joy.  I am very excited to see her in Dune 3 and Andy Serkis’ upcoming new Lord of the Rings movie (both of which have new teaser/trailer videos that I’ve posted above)!

I’m always interested in a new Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) project, so I’ll be keeping my eye out for the in-the-works Bannerman show being co-produced by Netflix & AMC.

I’m intrigued that they’re making an animated series based on the Absolute Batman comic book series by Scott Snyder & Nick Dragotta.  That’s a very strange (but super fun) comic-book series.  It could make a wild animated show if done well.

Speaking of comic book news, I cannot wait to read John Byrne: Elsewhen!  I’ve been following this project online for years, and I’m so excited it’s actually getting an official publication.  Mr. Byrne was the artist on the X-Men comic-book during what is arguably one of its greatest runs, written by Chris Claremont.  Claremont and Byrne collaborated on The Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, and so many amazing and iconic stories.  Years ago, Mr. Byrne, on his own and completely for his own amusement, started writing and drawing new X-Men stories, picking up from when he’d left the book decades ago.  That these stories are finally being inked & colored, and published in print, has me very excited.  I can’t wait to read them.

I was sad to hear of the death last month of Glen Hansard, a wonderfully talented musician and actor.  Once is a beautiful film; I need to find time to watch it again soon.

Also sad was the death of the great Sam Neill.  I of course loved him in Jurassic Park and The Hunt for Red October, but he was fantastic in so many different movies.

I’m interested in Michael Mann’s “final cut” of Manhunter I missed this when it was released theatrically (briefly) last month — I hope this gets a blu-ray release and I can get to see this!

I’m also interested in the in-the-works TV adaptation of John le Carré’s Legacy of Spies, to star Hugh Laurie!  (Mr. Laurie was terrific in The Night Manager, another le Carré adaptation.)
