News Around the Net: December 2025!

Let’s kick things off with the trailer for Disclosure Day, a new sci-fi film by Steven Spielberg:

A new film from Mr. Spielberg would of course have my attention, and I’m especially thrilled he’s returning to sci-fi.  And it stars Josh O’Connor, who just blew me away with his incredible lead role in Wake Up Dead Man?!!  I’m in!

The first of what will supposedly be four Avengers: Doomsday trailers attached to Avatar: Fire and Ash has dropped online:

I saw that in the theatre when I saw Fire and Ash.  It’s a fine teaser, and it’s nice to get confirmation of what has been rumored forever, which is that Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers, and we’re catching up to him in the alternate timeline of his happy ending with Peggy Carter from the end of Endgame.  I know it’s a year out, but I wish there was more to this teaser than just basically one shot of Steve Rogers.  Maybe once we see the other trailers together this will feel more exciting to me.

I lfound myself a lot more excited for this first trailer for Supergirl:

It’s very cool to me that this film is adapting a phenomenal Supergirl story from the comics, the mini-series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King & Bilquis Evely.  It’s fun to see aspects of that story brought to life in this trailer (which really just shows us scenes from the very beginning of the story; not surprising for a first trailer).  I like seeing a quick shot of Jason Momoa as Lobo (the DC universe character he always should have been playing).  I really hope they do this great story justice.

This trailer for Good Luck Have Fun Don’t Die caught my attention:

Sam Rockwell channeling Twelve Monkeys??  I’m in!

Then there’s this… Nic Cage as John Madden???

Wow, what a cast!  That looks super-weird, but I’m intrigued.

Sad stand-up comedians feels like a well-mined source of material, but I love Will Arnett, so I hope to see Is This Thing On? soon!  It’s out in select theatres already:

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Will the second season be as good?  I’m curious to see:

I like the promotion I’ve seen for Marvel’s latest TV show, Wonder Man.  This trailer looks interesting:

Even better is this fake interview with Trevor Slattery:

And this too!

If the show is able to channel that comedic energy, it will be great!  Hoping for the best.

Speaking of “hoping for the best”… the Scrubs reboot is actually happening, and coming out in February!

I’m still behind on House of the Dragon (I watched season one but still haven’t gotten to season two), but I’m curious about this new Game of Thrones spin-off show:

I like the basic idea and what I’ve seen so far.  Will it be any good?  Hard to say, but I intend to give it a shot.

Disney’s seemingly insatiable desire to remake every one of their animated films in live-action continues with Moana:

Moana is one of my favorite Disney films, so this is tempting, but I just am not that interested in seeing a live-action version of an already great animated film.

The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions are coming to theatres in honor of the 25th anniversary of Fellowship??  Fantastic!!  Back in 2003, I saw an amazing theatrical screening of the Extended Editions of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers in a marathon that led into the first screening of The Return of the King.  It was an amazing day in a movie theatre.  I hope I’m available to do this again!

Speaking of anniversaries, it’s been confirmed that the ORIGINAL versions of Star Wars will be returning to theatres for the film’s 50th anniversary in 2027.  I can’t wait!!  That will be a day long remembered.  George Lucas has tried his best to bury those original versions ever since the Special Edition re-release in the nineties.  I’m delighted to have a chance to see the original, unaltered version again.

Click here for a great interview with Kevin Smith, talking about the recent return of Dogma and his attempts (so far unsuccessful) to mount a Mallrats sequel.  Speaking of which, click here for a wonderful look back at Mallrats, which is somehow thirty years old.  Wow, I am old.  I still deeply love Kevin Smith’s first five films.  Dogma might be my favorite.  I bought the magnificent recent release of Dogma on 4K, and the film holds up terrifically well.  I still love it.  (So did my kids, which made me very happy!)

Keeping on the theme of movie anniversaries (that are making me feel old), click here for a great look back at GoldenEye on its 30th anniversary!

I read Brian Michael Bendis’ graphic novel Torso (which tells the true story of Elliot Ness’ hunt for a serial killer) almost three decades ago, soon after it was first collected in graphic novel form.  I’ve been following its journey through development hell in Hollywood for almost as long.  (If you haven’t read Bendis’ hilarious graphic novel Fortune and Glory, which tells the story of the bizarre first few years of his trying to pitch Torso as a movie, you must do so immediately!)  I’m happy to read the project might have taken a step forward to actually becoming a movie.  I’d love to see this happen someday!

I was very sad to read about James Ransone’s death.  I loved him in The Wire… and he was great in It Chapter Two.  He was a fantastic actor and will be missed.

Sigourney Weaver made headlines recently, pushing for the release of the original R-rated cut of Galaxy Quest.  I am doubtful this will ever happen, but wow would I love to see it someday.  I love Galaxy Quest, and I think it’s perfect the way it is.  But everyone involved in the film has always spoken fondly of the original R-rated version.  (That came up a lot in Never Surrender, the wonderful Galaxy Quest documentary!  Click here for my review of that doc and click here to watch it right now on Amazon Prime Video!)

It’s nice to get a small update on the new Avatar: The Last Airbender projects, including a new animated film and a new animated series.  It feels like these have been in the works forever!  I hope to get to see them soon!

This is great news that Mike Schur and Amy Poehler are reuniting for a new TV show!  (They, of course, collaborated on Parks and Rec.)  The new show is called Dig and also stars Hugh Laurie.  I can’t wait!

It’s cool to read about Tom Felton’s reprising his role of Draco Malfoy for the Broadway show The Cursed Child.

I’m excited by the idea that the in-the-works VisionQuest TV show will close out the informal trilogy of WandaVision and Agatha All Along With Star Trek: Picard season three show-runner Terry Matalas at the helm, I have high hopes for this show.

I’m thrilled that a new Luther movie, starring Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson, is in the works!  I quite liked the most recent Luther movie and have been hoping for more.

I’ll wrap up with what is probably the biggest news since my last news post, and definitely the saddest: the tragic murders of Rob Reiner & his wife Michele Reiner.  For as long as I’ve been paying attention to movies, Mr. Reiner has been one of my very favorite directors.  He went on one of the all-time best win streaks, with the astonishing run of This is Spinal Tap (1984), The Sure Thing (1985), Stand by Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally… (1989), Misery (1990), and A Few Good Men (1992).  Then after North (1994, which I’ve actually never seen — I need to remedy that) came The American President (1995).  What a run of all-time great movies!!  Any one of those films might have been the stand-out best movies of a great director.  Each one of them is one of if not THE BEST in that particular genre.  That Mr. Reiner made them ALL… one after another… and that those first few came out ONCE A YEAR… is just astonishing.  I have seen each of those movies about a billion times (except Misery, which I love but don’t have the stomach for watching too frequently).  They’ve been a part of my life forever, and they always will be.  And Mr. Reiner was also a terrific actor!  He was of course iconic as Meathead in All in the Family.  He was a key part of Spinal Tap.  He even had a fantastic role in season four of The Bear!!!  (I’m so sad we won’t get to see more of that character, who clearly seemed like he would have continued to be a part of the show.)  What a loss.  Click here for a collection of reminiscences of Mr. Reiner; click here for a a beautiful piece by Stephen King; click here for a strong appreciation of Mr. Reiner by Pete Hammond on Deadline.
