Jose and the Pirate Captain Toledano Updates!

I have lots of fun updates to share regarding my graphic novel José and the Pirate Captain Toledano!

Set in the shadows of the Spanish Inquisition, the graphic novel is the coming-of-age story of José Alfaro, a young refugee who forms a powerful bond with the mysterious Pirate Captain Toledano.  It’s also a dynamic pirate adventure on the high seas, and also a coming-of-age story about connecting with one’s heritage and finding one’s tribe.

The book’s author Arnon Shorr and I have had a lot of fun doing press around the book’s release.

Probably the most exciting thing that happened was that Arnon participated in “The New Face of Jewish Comics” panel last summer at San Diego Comic-Con!!  Here’s a high-quality recording of that very cool event:

Click here to listen to Arnon’s and my interview with the Alley Chats podcast.  Or you can listen to this wherever you listen to your podcasts.  Alley Chats is a podcast that “features interviews with the wildly creative people you find in Artist Alley at any comic-con or pop-culture convention”.  This was a fun conversation with Rob Southgate all about our book and its unique path from short film to graphic novel!

Click here to read Arnon’s reflections on “Ritual Objects and Lost Traditions – Themes of Loss and (Re)Discovery”.  This is a fascinating peek behind the curtain at the themes and real history that we wove into our graphic novel.

Arnon and I have done a number of events talking to people about our graphic novel, about the real history behind the story, and about larger issues of Jewish representation and telling Jewish stories.  We’ve done programs for kids, for high school students, for college students, and for adults!  Many have been in-person and some have been over Zoom.  One of the most interesting Zoom programs we’ve done was a program for the Institute of Jewish Experience that focused on the film’s Sephardi Jewish characters and setting.  Here’s a recording of that event:

Click here to read a wonderfully in-depth interview that Arnon & I did with The Jewish Journal in California.  This was the most fun interview of all the press that we did!  It was cool to be able to get so deeply into the topics we were discussing.

I bought and read José and the Pirate Captain Toledano and thoroughly enjoyed it. It would be a good book to share with young people, especially young people from marginalized backgrounds. (And young people from not-marginalized backgrounds, who might benefit from thinking about what it must be like.)
