News Around the Net!

The biggest news this past week is that Warner Brothers/Discovery have shelved the Batgirl movie, despite the fact that it’s been filmed and was already post-production.  They say it won’t ever be completed and released.  This absolutely breaks my heart for everyone involved in this production (especially the directors, Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah, who apparently learned this news WHILE AT EL ARBI’S WEDDING.  That is just the absolute worst.)  I was excited to see a Batgirl movie, particularly with a young woman of color (Leslie Grace) in the lead role.  The idea that people could spend years making a movie and then have it taken away and never completed/released is just awful.

Other sad news is the passing of Nichelle Nichols, who of course played Uhura on Star Trek.  Ms. Nichols was an extraordinary woman.  I recently wrote about the documentary, Woman in Motion, that chronicled Ms. Nichols’ remarkable work, beginning in 1977, to recruit men and women of color to be astronauts, scientists and engineers for NASA’s space shuttle program. (Click here to watch the documentary!)  Ms. Nichols created an extraordinary character in Nyota Uhura on Star Trek.  Though I always wished the character had been given more to do on the original series and in the movies, Ms. Nichols made the absolute most of what she was given.  Any Uhura scene sparkled with her charisma and energy.  She will be missed.  It’s so sad to me that so many of the original Star Trek actors have passed away…

In more fun news, there have been a lot of great trailers released recently…!

I just reviewed Atlanta season three, and here is a trailer for season four, coming in September!

Here’s a trailer for the Black Panther sequel, Wakanda Forever:

I’m very curious to see what a Black Panther movie looks like without the late Chadwick Boseman.  I really hope this works.  And is that Namor the Sub-Mariner I spy with my little eye??  Exciting!!  (There’s a LOT of water in that trailer!)

This Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer looks like fun:

It’s weird that it’s been such a long wait since the first Shazam! film.

This new trailer for Andor looks spectacular:

I really, really hope this show is good.  The trailers have all looked great.  But the one-two punch of The Book of Boba Fett and then Obi-Wan Kenobi have left my faith in Star Wars TV shows shaken…

Here’s a new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power:

Will this show be any good?  It’s hard to tell!  I am cautiously optimistic.

Speaking of fantasy shows I’m interested in, but I’m not sure will be good, we come to the Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon:

Am I ready to dive back into the world of Game of Thrones?  Will this prequel capture my attention the way the original show did?  We’ll see…

YES, bring on Star Trek: Lower Decks season three:

It’s the only modern Star Trek show that I like!!  Season two was terrific; I am super-excited for season three.

Bring on the cuteness: here’s a trailer for I am Groot:

Here’s a new trailer for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law:

I love that they’ve made a She-Hulk show, and I’m liking the somewhat silly tone of these trailers, which is right for this character.  I remain unconvinced by the CGI on She-Hulk herself, though.  I hope that’s improved for the actual finished show.

This is an interesting report on Chris Claremont’s recent panel at C2E2.  Mr. Clarement wrote the X-Men comic from the seventies into the nineties, and he’s hugely responsible for so much of the best X-Men stories and characters.  It’s sad that he’s been mostly sidelined from comics for the past two decades.

Are they really making a Godzilla vs Kong sequel??  Looks that way.  I thought Godzilla vs Kong was a lot dumber than I’d hoped.

Hang on, it can’t really be possible that The Simpsons Movie came out FIFTEEN years ago, is it???  Wow.  Here’s a fun look back at that film (which I love!).
