News Around the Net: Ted Lasso Season Four Trailer & More!

Let’s jump right in with the biggest news: a trailer and release date for Ted Lasso season four!!!

That’s a great trailer, and I am excited for this show to return.  I’m only bummed by some of the absences.  I knew that Jamie Tartt probably wouldn’t be in it, because Phil Dunster is working on another show.  But where’s Nate the Great (Nick Mohammed)?  Where’s Sam (Toheeb Jimoh)?  I’m going to miss the rest of the gang.  I really hope they’re able to recapture the magic.  I can’t wait for August fifth!!

Here’s a great new trailer for Supergirl:

I’m liking what I’m seeing!  The vibe borrows from James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but I like that vibe!  I like the look, I like the balance of action and pathos, I like Lobo, I like all the outer space stuff.  It’s a great trailer!  I have high hopes for this.

A new Ridley Scott film always has my interest, and there’s a lot to digest in this trailer for The Dog Stars:

That could be an awesome post-apocalyptic epic… or it could be a dour drag.  Hard to tell.  But I hope for the best!

I’m intrigued by this strange trailer for The End of Oak Street:

When J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot succeed in telling a unique story with a sci-fi bent (in films such as Cloverfield and Super 8), I’m usually pretty happy!  But they also miss a fair amount of the time.  (Don’t get me started on J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek or Star Wars movies…)  So we’ll see… but for now, this trailer has definitely grabbed my interest.

I’m impressed that James Gunn and the DC/Warner Brothers folks have leaned so heavily into horror with this first trailer for Clayface:

Clayface is a great character, and I like most of the people involved with this movie.  This trailer has me excited, even though in general movies about Marvel or DC side-characters, separated from the main characters, tend to be bad.  Can a Clayface movie work without Batman?  I guess we’ll find out in October…

A few weeks ago, we got our first real look at the HBO Max Harry Potter show:

That’d be a fine trailer if the movies didn’t already exist.  But they do!!  I don’t have much if any interest in this re-do of the movies, which were pretty great.  That the show maintains the basic look of the world from the movies, but is retelling the same story with new actors, just seems so strange and pointless to me.  (It is a nice note that they’re going with JK Rowling’s original title.)

Speaking of strange re-do’s, here’s a trailer for the live-action Moana:

I love the original, animated Moana, so I was sort of interested in seeing what they’d do with this in live action, but just as with Harry Potter, they’ve stuck so closely to the look and iconography of the original film that I’m just not seeing much of any point in this.  (The Rock’s wig got a lot of criticism online, and while it does look a little silly, it doesn’t really bother me.)

This trailer for Guy Ritchie’s latest film, In the Grey, looks fun!

I like seeing so many actors from Mr. Ritchie’s previous films returning for this one!  The cast is great, and I like the tone of what looks like a fun action movie.

I’m also intrigued by this trailer for The Wizard of the Kremlin:

I like a good Cold War thriller!

And speaking of Russians, here’s a trailer at last for Star City, the Russian-centered spin-off of For All Mankind:

I am interested in this spin-off; I just hope it’s not too dour and unpleasant.

This is a fun announcement video for the title of the Spaceballs sequel:

Spaceballs: The New One is a great title.  I hope this is good!!

Holy cow, Wonder Man was renewed for a second season!!  I did NOT see that coming!!  So few of the Marvel Disney+ TV shows have gotten a second season (Loki was the only previous live-action show, plus Daredevil: Born again, but my understanding is that Daredevil was basically one long season split in half), and I worried Wonder Man was too small a show, too under the radar.  But I loved the first season, and I’m delighted the show will continue!

I’m a huge Paul Feig fan, though I haven’t watched The Housemaid yet.  It feels like perhaps it’s too far afield from what I’ve enjoyed in Mr. Feig’s previous films, though I do hope to get to it eventually.  Meanwhile, it seems like happy news for Mr. Feig that a sequel is already in the works.

Click here to read a little bit about the writers’ of Shrinking’s approach in wrapping up so many storylines at the end of their (terrific) third season, something I wondered about in my review.

I am halfway through watching the fourth season of Invincible, which is spectacular, and I’m thrilled the show has been renewed for a fifth season!  By my estimate, it will take about eight seasons to adapt the complete run of the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley.  I would LOVE to see that happen!!  This is a great series and you should definitely watch it on Amazon Prime Video if you’re not already doing so!!

Every now and then we get a peek behind the curtain of the process of creating Disney’s animated films, and it’s not always pretty.  (For example, I love the documentary The Sweat Box, that Disney tried to bury, about the tumultuous process of creating the movie that became The Emperor’s New Groove.)  I was sad to read this story about the cancellation of the Pixar animated movie Be Fri, which had been in development for over THREE YEARS.  That’s just awful for director Kristen Lester and all the animators.

There was a lot of online kerfuffle a few weeks ago when the “Assembly Cut” of Alien 3 dropped on HBO Max.  I’ve of course seen this long ago, on the extraordinary Alien Quadrilogy DVD/blu-ray set overseen by Charles de Lauzirika.  There were actually two versions of this cut, assembled by Mr. Lauzirika.  The DVD box set had one version, and the later blu-ray release had an updated version, with some improved visual effects.  This “Assembly Cut” was Mr. Lauzirika’s attempt to restore Director David Fincher’s initial version of the film, before it was significantly re-edited and cut down.  It’s not perfect, but it’s a fascinating alternative version of the film.  It’s definitely worth watching for any fans of the Alien franchise who haven’t seen it.

Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot seems to slowly be moving forward, and I’m thrilled it’s going to star Danielle Deadwyler!!  She was a stand-out in The Harder They Fall and Station Eleven.

I’m thrilled that Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles), has a new animated film in the works for Netflix, and that it stars Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson!  Click here for a first look, with several images!

It seems very, very smart to me that Marvel/Disney are re-releasing Avengers: Endgame back to theaters in September, ahead of Avengers: Doomsday… and apparently with a sneak of some extra Doomsday footage, to boot!  Cool.  (I wish they were re-releasing Avengers: Infinity War too, as I like that movie a lot more than Endgame!!)

Please don’t forget that I have a brand new comic book, SIGNAL FIRES, and it’s available for order NOW!
